iPads in Schools

Our schools are thinking about incorporating iPads next year. I am looking forward to this change, because I believe tablets have the power to change the way students learn and teachers teach with the right professional development and support. I have compiled a list of ways ipads could be used and links to various articles  about the topic.

High School Technology
·         Socrative:Socrative is a smart student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games via smartphones, laptops, and tablets.” www.socrative.com
·         Animation Software: Sam Animation and various other programs are being used in the high schools. There are tons of free apps available for download onto tablets
·         Skype, Facetime: iPads come with Facetime and Skype is a free download. Great for class discussions and interviews. Use this program to speak with students in other 1:1 environments.
·         Edmodo:  Engage your students through online learning. Create discussions, polls and quizzes, assignments for students. Post grades etc. www.edmodo.com  Free app.
·          Digital Storytelling: Create videos, photo stories, etc. iPads have built in camera’s which will allow students to take photos and videos and the touch of a button and then transfer to a app seamlessly to build an  app.
·         CK-12.org E-Textbooks: Teacher’s create their own textbooks via CK-12.org. Available for iPad. www.ck12.org

·         Google Docs: Google Docs is an alternative to Microsoft Office products that can be used by teachers and students to create spreadsheets, forms, documents, presentations and drawings.  The applications are very similar to Microsoft products, which makes the programs very easy to learn. Google Docs are online programs, therefore students can collaborate and easily share documents with each other and the teacher.  ( Gmail account needed)

·          Google Play Books: A free app for the tablet or computer that allows students to download free books to their mobile device. Say goodbye to buying class sets of novels.  Read  “The Time Machine”, “ The Secret Garden,” “Wuthering Heights,” “ Pride and Prejudice, and Shakespeare are all available. The ActivTable, Innovative Learning from Promethean

Oooh's and Ahhh's filled the room as first, second and third graders witnessed the unveiling of the Promethean ActivTable. Their eager little hands could not wait to touch it. The students intuitively knew how to use it. Each one  touched the screen, watching their fingers move objects in different directions at the same time. Surprise filled their eyes when the realized they could make objects small then large and stretch them to and fro.  With approximately 70 activities ranging for all grades levels the ActivTable was a hit with these youngsters, view the video below and see the fun!
